What Does The Word Antichrist Mean?

The word “antichrist” means “against God” or “Substitute for God.” One title of the popes “Vicar of Christ” (Latin: Vicarius Christi1) means substitute for Christ. Look at Daniel chapter 11 with me.
Daniel 11:36 NKJ
36. “Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods ...”
When the popes first began using the title “Vicar of Christ,” they fulfilled the Scriptures concerning the Antichrist’s organization that he will “exalt himself above every god, speak blasphemies against the God of gods.”
The popes believe that they are the substitute for God. In other words, they are His replacement. They take His place. They magnify themselves above God since they use the title “Vicar of Christ” or “Vicar of God.”
Another similar title the popes use is “Vicarius Filii Dei”2, in Latin, which translates “Substitute for” “son” of “God.” The popes are claiming to be replacing the Son of God by exalting themselves above Him. What is so unusual about this title is that it adds up to the number 666 in Latin.
A look into 1 John will give us further insight into the word Antichrist.
1 John 2:18 NKJ
18. Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come...
Notice that John refers to two types of antichrists. He first speaks of “the Antichrist” and then he refers to antichrists in a general term referring to many who were “against Christ.” During John’s day, while he wrote 1 John in the first century, he knew that there were many antichrists at that time. Those antichrists were against Christ, but they were not “the Antichrist” that would come in the Last Days or End Times. There will be one last Antichrist who will rule the earth for seven years. He will be the worst antichrist ever.
In the first century, John knew of many antichrists. The interesting thing is that many popes and Roman Emperors who were against Christ had come to power by that time. Many Christians had already been martyred at the hand of the popes and Emperors by the time John wrote the Book of 1 John.
Since the persecution was so strong and many antichrists had risen, during John’s day, he believed it was the last hour or near the End Times. He made this statement before he received the Revelation from Christ which became the Book of Revelation.
Although John didn’t know when Christ was coming again, one thing was clear in his day and time... there were many people who were against Christ. Those who were more fiercely opposed to Christ and Christianity were the Emperors and popes.
Jews, in the first century, did hate Christianity. But, by far, the Roman Emperors and popes exceeded them all in trying to eradicate Christians from the face of the earth. Jews may have, at that time, come in a very distant second in trying to snuff out Christianity in comparison to the Roman Emperors and popes.
Notice that the title the popes use, Vicarius Filii Dei, add up to the number 666, the number of the Antichrist.
Vicarius Filii Dei = 666
The popes use this title, Vicarius Filii Dei, which means “Substitute for” “son” (of) “God.”
The popes declare that they are antichrists when they use the title Vicarius Filii Dei. They believe they are Christ’s and God’s substitute ... the very meaning of the word antichrist.
